Video Tip: How a Clothes Hanger Can Help Cure Your Slice

Mike Rugg of the Steve Dresser Golf Academy at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. has raided his clothing closet to produce a simple training aid that can help cure your slice. Check it out!

Mike Rugg:
Hi, my name is Mike Rugg, and I’m one of the instructors here at the Steve Dresser Golf Academy, located at the True Blue Golf Club and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. I want to bring a concept or an idea. One of the things that we deal with on a consistent basis is, a lot of our pupils come to us with very steep, over-the-top motions. And there are many reasons, but I just like to deal with one – and a simple training aid that you can use to help you get out of this situation.

A lot of people come to us with a top backswing wrist position in this cup position, and then they pull down quite steeply trying to square the club face by swinging left. Well, that produces a great slice or a great pull, a great top, great shank – a lot of bad things, and nothing good.

I have a simple solution. Setting up with a simple hanger and I wish I invented this, but it’s such a great training aid, I like to repeat it. Just put a little bit of the hanger at the end. It’s basically between your wrist at address, then slowly halfway back, we will make contact with our left arm and at the top. You can see that the hanger is pressing against my left forearm near the wrist. Now I can bring that whole package down. Now I’m swinging the club from inside the target line or in a shallow position rather than a steep position.

A simple thing. Raid the closet, get a hanger, work in the mirror. You’re going to cure your slice!
