Strantz Spotlight: #17 at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

A key feature to many of Mike Strantz’s designs is the way he works his designs’ land movement within their natural surroundings. When you play at True Blue Golf Club you will notice the sloping fairways, the expansive waste areas, and the tall trees that frame a lot of fairways. The par-three 17th at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club also embodies this Strantz design trait.

The first thing you see when you step to the 17th tee is the expansive waste area that sits between you and the green. This waste area wraps around the right side and back of the green, too. Unless you miss it right or airmail the green, the waste area is not a factor. The bunker that is in play is the pot bunker that sits just off the front of this putting surface. Depending on the hole location, you can use the slopes to help feed your bunker shot toward the hole.

This green is one of our favorites on the golf course. Before we discuss the putting surface itself, let’s talk about the surrounds. Surrounding that bunker is some short grass which is a good spot to miss. The back-left portion of this green feeds your golf ball down toward a runoff area. This green begs you to use the slope to get the ball close to the hole. While this hole might look daunting, it is getable.

Caledonia Golf & Fish Club is one that embodies what Mike Strantz wanted in each of his designs. A real golf course. Take on this beautiful track on your next trip!
