The late Mike Strantz became one of the game’s renowned course architects, with deep roots in South Carolina from helping Pete Dye design Osprey Point at Kiawah Island Golf Resort to the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island. Four years after Caledonia’s highly anticipated opening in 1994, Strantz opened True Blue Golf Club as Caledonia’s neighbor offering a completely different look. Then and now, True Blue boasts wide fairways, huge greens, hardly any rough, and waste bunkers you can drive in.
Another True Blue hallmark is its collection of some of the most aesthetically pleasing par three holes you’ll find anywhere, including the 158-yard 14th Hole.
The 14th is a downhill par three with an hourglass-shaped green guarded by one of the bigger bunkers on the entire golf course. From the very back this hole will play as long as 158 yards, but most players will play this hole anywhere from 154 down to 134 yards. Ranked as the third-easiest hole on the course with its 16 handicap, this hole can still play harder than expected depending on the wind.
With a bunker that stretches from the front of the tee box to the green, if the pin is on the right side you will have a forced carry to get to the green. If you hit the green, hopefully your ball can hold it. Over and left of the left side of the green sits a large, deep bunker which brings bogey into play. Front right of the green brings a couple small bunkers over the back with a deeper bunker over the back right corner. The place to miss the green is short left where your ball can find the short grass.
This green’s hourglass shape gives True Blue multiple options for where to set the pin for the day. Hitting the correct side of the green is a must when you play this hole. The middle of the hourglass gives players a small window to get through. Hitting the green is one thing; hitting the correct side of the green is a whole different story.
Mike Strantz was a wizard when it came to making some of the best looking par threes in the country, and the 14th Hole at True Blue is no exception. To play the 14th Hole at True Blue and 17 other championship holes, click here! For more information on True Blue, give us a call at 888-483-6800!
